John Lennon turns 75 today. Too bad he’s not around to celebrate.
Lennon was a musical genius of the first water... but like many geniuses, Lennon could occasionally be full of himself. Satirist Tony Hendra, on the Radio Dinner album he co-created with fellow National Lampoon writer Michael O’Donoghue, used Lennon’s own words - culled from a 1970 interview with Rolling Stone’s publisher Jann Wenner - to skewer him in a delightful little piece entitled “Magical Misery Tour.”

Hendra, along with Sean Kelly, also wrote Lemmings, the
Lampoon’s
off-Broadway show, notable for being the first show to star Chevy
Chase, John Belushi, and Christopher Guest. After his stint with the
Lampoon ended in 1978, he eventually went on to become editor-in-chief
of the late, lamented Spy magazine. He also played band manager Ian Faith in the film This Is Spinal Tap, which also featured Christopher Guest, his old friend from Lemmings.

This was a very touching tribute to Jack Lemmon, although I thought he was 76 when he died, and I really had no idea about all that conflict with the Stones. Nor did I know that Lemmon was shackin' up with some Japanese chick, and I can't for the life of me figure out how he managed to fit musical performances around his acting schedule. He must have been an incredible individual.
